New Year – New Job?

New Year – New Job? Before you make the changes, here are a few things to consider.

The New Year can often be a time for reflection and January is officially the nation’s favourite month to change jobs with almost one in five people saying that they consider relocating.

Coupled with the fact that when you work with horses, the endless wet weather, cold fingers and mud can make January feel like a bit of a slog. But before you make the leap, here are a few things to consider.

Are you feeling a bit despondent because of the weather?

January blues are a real thing that often results in a lack of motivation, low energy and tiredness. Experts believe that this is connected to the lack of daylight, so before you make big life decisions, it is always worth considering why you are feeling like you want a change. Remember that it won’t rain forever. If you loved your job last summer, the chances are you probably will again this summer.

If your itchy feet are not connected with the weather then spend some time writing down what you like about your current job and then in a separate column write down the reasons for considering a move/what you would like in a new job.

Would a new job offer a better solution, or are there any issues/changes that can be resolved within your current work place?

The grass might seem greener – but sometimes it is not the case!

It’s not always easy to have a conversation with your employer about employment related issues, but many challenges can be easily resolved when discussed.

If this is the case then ask your employer for a meeting in a quiet place where you won’t get disturbed. Have a clear list (this can be written) of the things you would like to discuss and keep your meeting professional with a clear outcome.

Most employers will be thankful that you are able to talk through any concerns and for the opportunity to reach a conclusion – which will also mean that they don’t lose a valued member of their team.

A move is right for me

There are of course situations when it is the right time to make a move and there might be many reasons contributing to this. According to research, the number one reason for leaving a job is connected to salary!

Other reasons might be a relocation, the chance to travel abroad, a promotion, the opportunity to learn or develop skills, or a change of discipline; in which case a new job can offer exciting many new opportunities.

Whilst looking for a new job is exciting, there are many different positions available, so you want to be as sure as you can that it is as good in real life as it sounds.

Before you start your search write down all the things you would like from a new job as this will help to focus your thoughts when reading adverts.

Split these into three columns

  1. Things that are essential and that you don’t want to compromise on. This might include accommodation, location, or a minimum salary expectation.
  2. Things that you would like to have. This might include livery for your horse, training to upskill, or a certain position.
  3. A wish list – be realistic but remember to dream.
