Description

The Hong Kong Jockey Club

The Hong Kong Jockey Club is committed to advancing equestrian sport and operates four riding schools dedicated to promoting riding through training programmes, horse hiring, livery services, visits, and competitions. After rigorous assessment, these schools remain the only British Horse Society–recognised riding centres in Hong Kong.

At the Beas River Equestrian Centre—Hong Kong’s largest facility—257 horses are cared for across a world‑class complex that includes a riding school, livery yard, competition arenas, and retraining unit.

We are now seeking an experienced Equestrian Rider & Coach to join our Equestrian Centre. Reporting to the Senior Manager for the Riding School and working collaboratively with the Senior Equestrian Trainer, the successful candidate will contribute to the retraining and development of all our horses transitioning into the Riding School. This is a six‑day‑per‑week role.

Job Description

  • Assist with assessing horses and planning their training programmes.
  • Design and document tailored exercise and schooling plans to safely and progressively prepare horses for their new roles.
  • Conduct daily exercise and training sessions, including both ridden and groundwork activities.
  • Teach a variety of lessons within the Riding School.
  • Provide support to our Livery Members such as riding their horse and coaching the riders, to aid their joint progression and continued development.
  • Assist during veterinary visits and collaborate closely with veterinary and farrier teams to support each horse’s health and rehabilitation.
  • Implement varied training programmes across different environments and disciplines (e.g., hacking, lungeing, long reining, arena work, grass / hill work)
  • Guide and supervise Equestrian Assistants & other key colleagues involved in the training work.
  • Support daily exercise scheduling, administrative tasks, and operational duties as required.
  • Undertake any additional tasks assigned by management to ensure smooth and efficient operation of the Centre.

Requirements

  • Qualified Coach & Rider; Level 3 or above Equine related riding and coaching qualifications, preferably British Horse Society.
  • Extensive experience handling and riding young, challenging or sensitive horses. Using a patient and empathetic approach.
  • Strong understanding of training and re‑schooling methods, both ridden and from the ground.
  • Prior experience working with thoroughbreds and/or racehorses.
  • Able to work independently while being a reliable and collaborative team member.
  • Fluent English preferred; Cantonese proficiency is an advantage.
  • Holder of a valid first aid certificate or willing to work towards one.
  • Strong knowledge around rehabilitation and training horses returning to work after injury.
  • Demonstrable ability in train horses from the first few steps to low‑level competition in dressage, show jumping, and cross‑country.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a customer‑focused work ethic.
