Working abroad can offer so many new experiences and opportunities. As well as the chance to explore new places and cultures, it can also be a way of escaping the great British Weather!

If you have seen some of the jobs on the Equine Elite Job’s Board that are based further afield, you may be already dreaming about the sunshine, but before you pack your bags here are some things to consider.

  • Do your research. Spending a bit of time doing your research will help to give you a better understanding of the job, the business, the country, local area and local amenities. Google, Google Maps, Facebook, TikTok and Instagram can all help to build a more informed picture.
  • Some equestrian jobs abroad also include travel and visa application costs. Make sure you understand what is included, what other charges there may be and the terms of your return ticket (if included).

  • Ask the same questions about the position as you would if you were applying for a job in the UK. Are the working hours different (some countries start early in the morning to avoid working in the hottest part of the day, but then go back in the evening)? What does the role involve and what are your duties? Will you be working as part of a team, or have sole charge?
  • It is common for accommodation to be included but be sure to ask lots of questions surrounding this as well? Where is it situated, is it shared, are there additional bills to pay?
  • Not all countries have a legal requirement for contracts of employment (written statement of terms) to be issued. Our team can help with any questions about this regarding individual vacancies advertised on our site.

  • Check the payment terms of the job and the currency you are getting paid in. This can have implications depending on the exchange rate. It is also worth noting that if you are planning on keeping your bank account to check for any additional charges when using your card abroad.
  • Not all phones work abroad – if you do decide to travel then make sure your phone is compatible and any associated charges with your network – data roaming can be very expensive so it is always worth checking before you go.

  • Going abroad to work can be really exciting, but ultimately remember that if you are moving to another country for a job – then you are going to also have to work! If you are keen on exploring, remember to check with your potential employer the working hours, days off, holidays and if the use of a car is included. If not, are there good assessable transport links?
  • Don’t forget your insurance. If you are planning on working abroad then your standard travel insurance won’t cover you if you get injured. The British Grooms Association have a dedicated grooms travel policy, find out more here: https://britishgrooms.org.uk/join-now/bga-travel-insurance.

Enjoy your travels! The world really is at your fingertips.
